Rickson Zavare Murehwa

African Art Shona Sculpture - Rickson MurehwaOriginally inspired by his late grandfather who was a blacksmith, Rickson is amongst the young talented generation of Shona stone sculptors. As an artist he specializes in abstract pieces and prefers to work with hard stone.

In his words: “When attempting to work on a stone, I use its hardness, texture, and form. My mood is the major player in the creative process. It is very difficult to create a good piece because you cannot feel the same and see the same vision in the stone throughout the creation process. It can take weeks, months or years to come up with a piece of sculpture from the raw piece of stone. It can be frustrating at times because the piece might break near its completion”.

As a young artist he hopes to participate in exhibitions all over the world and take part in cultural exchange programs with other foreign artists and gain more exposure and experience.
