Lawrence Sandaramu

African Art Shona Sculpture - Laurence SandaramuLawrence was born in Harare in 1976, and was one of the privileged few to be trained at the famous Chapungu gallery, by Squari Chikwanda.

The Chapungu Shona Sculpture Centre is world renowned in the Shona art movement and to be trained there is a high recommendation.

He has spent all of his life in the capital district and now lives in Chitungwiza where he has developed into an accomplished artist and a fine young man.

He looks much younger than his years, which mistakenly leads buyers to believe a lower price can be negotiated.  It is not until they, the buyers, find themselves over their heads in the bartering, do they realise their mistake.  He is indeed a tough young man.

He married Kudakwashe Kaneta in 1996, and has two girls, Florence and Felisters.

Chitungwiza is a half hour drive from Harare, was a poor settlement and, compared to Harare, it still is, but the inhabitants are very resourceful and have developed Chitungwiza to where it is now recognised as Zimbabwe’s second largest city.

Laurence sculpts mainly abstract in the very hard springstone.
