African Art Shona Sculpture - David Chikuzeni

David Chikuzeni, born in 1976, started carving at the age of 12 under the guidance of one of Zimbabwe’s most acclaimed artists, Albert Nathan Mamvura.

David is one of the founder members of the Chitungwiza Arts Cooperative, where he still works in this open-air studio with approximately 100 other sculptors.

He participated in the Mobile Annual Exhibition in 1992 and 1996, and was one of a select group of Zimbabwean artists invited to participate in Expo 2000 in Germany.

His work can be found at the Zimbabwe National Gallery and the Nhukutuku Gallery. Art collectors from Germany, U.S.A., Iceland, France and Australia have bought Chikuzeni’s work.

He has an unadorned simplicity to his work and not infrequently he injects humour into his depictions of the human condition. An enthusiastic young man who enjoys mentoring others David says he sculpts for “love of art” and believes carving stone “is a dream come true.”
