Daniel Chidoti

African Art Shona Sculpture - Daniel ChidotiDaniel was born in 1980 in Mbare which is an impoverished area of Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe.

He still lives there with his wife Lucy and their daughter Betty.

Daniel's elderly mother and father also came to live with him.

His mother is a beautifully natured lady, despite suffering from high blood pressure.

Shona culture does not allow a family member to be turned away in their time of need, so when his sister and young child came to him for shelter, he accepted them into his modest house also.

Daniel was taught by his brother, Stanley, also a full time carver.

He started working full time for a maize storage facility in 2002 but, with the lack of maize in Zimbabwe, Daniel came back to sculpting full time in 2003.

A deeply religious young man, he spends a fair amount of his spare time reading the bible.

The inspiration for this may come from the fact his father is an elder at their church.
